Cajun Fighting Championships brought Mixed Martial Arts to New Iberia with a 10 fight card featuring 8 amateur and 2 professional bouts. The main event saw Kashiff Solarin taking on Mike Guidry of Tim Credeur's Gladiator Academy of Lafayette. Solarin hails from Haslet, Texas and trains under former UFC champion Guy Mezger's Lions Den.
Bout 1: Cody McPike v Donald Goff (155 lbs) 3x3 min rds
McPike looks for the early clinch, and Goff wings punches until they tie up. Goff lands a big takedown and quickly passes to full mount. McPike turns his back, and Goff tries for the rear naked choke. McPike escapes the position at the close of the round.
Rd 2
Goff throws more wild punches and then shoots. He gets the takedown and passes to mount. From here McPike offers no defense as Goff executes an armbar to which McPike taps.
Winner- Goff by armbar Round 2
Bout 2: Junior Mesa v Bob Fails (205 lbs) 3x3 min rds
Rd 1
Bob Fails is the much larger and taller fighter. Mesa tries to close the distance, and Fails goes for a standing guillotine choke. Mesa eventually works out of it and shoots again at the close of the round. Mesa clearly doesn't want to trade with the larger Fails.
Rd 2
Fails comes out very aggressive with punches and kicks. Mesa tries to cover up and eats a thundering uppercut that drops him to the canvas. The ref jumps in to pull Fails off and thus Fails scores the TKO.
Winner-Fails by ref stoppage TKO Round 2.
Bout 3: Nick Rutland v Clay Burns (130 lbs catchweight) 3x3 min rds
Rd 1
Burns rushes Rutland and pushes him against the cage. Rutland defends well, but Burns eventually gets the takedown. Rutland works a very active guard going for numerous submissions, but Burns is content to defend and land some ground and pound. Rutland gets to his feet, and the round ends with him in Burn's Thai clinch.
Rd 2
Rutland falls throwing a kick, and Burns capitalizes. The round is spent with Burns landing some good ground strikes and Rutland going for submission.
Rd 3
This round was more on the feet as they were looking to trade punches. Burns lands some big knees from the clinch. He then stumbles and Rutland takes his back before sliding off. Burns then lands a knee to Rutland on the ground and gets warned for it. The fight restarts on the feet and the fight ends with both of them swinging big punches with reckless abandon. The crowd goes nuts after the bell. This was a very fun, competitive fight. Rutland showed toughness and heart, but was unble to handle the larger Burns.
Winner- Burns by unanimous decision
Bout 4: Chai Phumsorn v Landon Ackel (145 lbs) 3x3 min rds
Rd 1
Phumsorm comes out with some impressive kicks, and he follows them up with a quick takedown. Ackel shows good wrestling in reversing position. They proceed to exchange top position a few more times with Ackel holding Phumsorn in a tight headlock. Phumsorn gets on top and passes to mount. He then quickly goes for an armbar. Ackel has no choice but to tap.
Winner-Phumsorn by armbar round 1.
Bout 5: Chris Baker v Scott Prejean (205 lbs) 3x3 min rds
Rd 1
Prejean immediately shoots for the takedown and secures it. He throws some haymakers that Baker blocks. Baker then slips a leg over Prejean's shoulder and locks up a triangle. It isn't tight, so Baker applies a modified armbar at the same time, and Prejean taps out.
Winner-Baker by modified triangle armbar round 1.
Bout 6: Matt Schenell (Elite MMA) v Devin Cannon (Global Fitness) (135 lbs) 3x3 min rds
Rd 1
Schenell falls into a kneebar attempt. Then he transitions to a heelhook. After standing up Schenell gets another takedown. Then Cannon locks up an armbar that Schenell patiently defends by stacking Cannon up. They stand, and Schenell lands yet another takedown. The round ends with Cannon getting a triangle and Schenell posturing up.
Rd 2
Schenell comes out aggresively with a good flurry. He then scores a takedown. The rest of the round is a very technical display of ground fighting with numerous sweeps and submission attempts from both fighters. Schenell is the aggressor, yet Cannon's skill keeps him constantly one step ahead of his opponent.
Rd 3
This round is a continuation of the previous round. Schenell scores takedowns and then has to work to defend the barrage of submission attempts from Cannon. Cannon lands two sound upkicks, and the round ends with Schenell fighting off a guillotine choke.
Winner-Cannon by unanimous decision
Bout 7: Trey Ramey v Jody McCallon (Cajun Karate) (265 lbs) 3x3 min rds
Rd 1
McCallon lands a stiff jab. He throws a combination, and Ramey shoots. McCallon counters and gets on top of Ramey. McCallon mounts and pounds away on Ramey until he taps from the punishment.
Winner-McCallon by submission from strikes round 1.
Bout 8: Eric Acuna (0-1) v Aaron Phillips(Gladiators Lafayette) (0-0-0) (135 lbs) 3x5 min rds
Rd 1
Acuna pushes Phillips to the cage. They have a position battle in the clinch. Acuna eventually gets the takedown. Phillips gets back to his feet, gets the Thai clinch, and delivers a knee flush to Acuna's face that sends him crashing down for the KO. Acuna was barely conscious when he hit the ground.
Winner-Phillips by KO at 1:26 round 1
Bout 9: Brian Foster v Randy Landry (Cajun Karate) (185 lbs) 3x3 min rds
Rd 1
Foster shoots right away and gets the takedown. Landry lands a nice jab and Foster smiles back at him. Foster gets another takedown as the round ends.
Rd 2
Landry lets his hands go more and lands some good shots. Foster shoots, and Landry attempts a standing guillotine. As he sinks it tighter he pulls guard. Foster taps.
Winner-Landry by submission from arm-in guillotine at 1:34 round 2.
Main event Kashiff Solarin (1-2) v Mike Guidry (2-0) (125 lbs)
Rd 1
Guidry comes out throwing stiff punches and kicks. Solarin shoots. Guidry locks in a guillotine up against the cage. Guidry pulls guard. Solarin's arm is trapped and is forced to tap. Guidry is looking a like a complete fighter and who knows how far he can go.
Winner-Guidry by submission from guillotine choke at 2:43 round 1.
